Anche quest’anno abbiamo partecipato alla Maker Faire Rome, The European Edition, la più importante manifestazione europea del settore dell’elettronica fai-da-te e dell’artigianato digitale. Stavolta la fiera era all’interno della Città Universitaria, dal 16 al 18 Ottobre.
Eravamo presenti in tre diversi stand.
In quello della nostra associazione, con il progetto “TribeBots“, interamente sviluppato da noi. Questa è la pagina Maker Faire del progetto.
In un altro stand, con il progetto “FabLab Radio“, sviluppato insieme a GreenTales. Questa la pagina Maker Faire del progetto.
Infine in un altro ancora con il progetto LitePlacer, sviluppato da Juha Kuusama e costruito e presentato da noi. Questa la pagina Maker Faire del progetto.
La fiera ha visto una grande partecipazione di pubblico e i nostri progetti sono stati apprezzati anche dagli organizzatori.
Per il progetto “TribeBots” abbiamo ricevuto il premio Maker of Merit, attribuito a 110 progetti tra i circa 600 presentati in totale da tutta Europa, direttamente dalle mani di Sherry Huss, vicepresidente di Maker Media e co-creatrice di Maker Faire.
Per lo stesso progetto siamo stati selezionati da RAI Radio 2 per un’intervista trasmessa in diretta dall’interno della fiera, nella trasmissione Caterpillar.
Il progetto TribeBots consiste in uno sciame di piccoli robot che si muovono tramite motori a vibrazione. I robot possono accorgersi della presenza di altri robot nelle vicinanze ed attivare dei comportamenti di conseguenza.
I robot sono stati programmati per simulare varie situazioni, ad esempio possono essere suddivisi in due tribù ed agitarsi se incontrano un membro di una diversa tribù.
Oppure possono agire in modo sincronizzato, simulando una strana danza.
I robot possono essere comandati attraverso un apposito telecomando o anche tramite un’app, scaricabile su un dispositivo portatile.
Con la FabLab Radio è possibile ascoltare le radio che trasmettono via internet utilizzando uno strumento del tutto simile ad una radio tradizionale.
Noi ci siamo occupati di tutta la parte hardware e software, mentre GreenTales ha progettato e stampato il case.
La LitePlacer è una macchina di tipo “pick and place” che serve a posizionare in maniera automatica i componenti SMD dei circuiti stampati.
Qualche tempo prima della Maker Faire, ci ha contattato Juha Kuusama dalla Finlandia proponendoci un accordo interessante: ci avrebbe regalato una sua macchina se l’avessimo montata a partire da un kit che ci avrebbe spedito. L’accordo prevedeva anche che l’avremmo portata a Roma e l’avremmo aiutato con l’esposizione in italiano durante la fiera.
Ecco come mai ora questa macchina troneggia nella nostra sede.

This year we participated for the third time in Maker Faire Rome, The European Edition, the most important European event about electronics and do-it-yourself. This time the fair was held in the Città Universitaria, from 16th to 18th October.
We were in three different booths.
One was the booth of our association, in which we showed the “TribeBots” project, that was entirely developed by us. This is the page of the project in Maker Faire site.
Another booth was together with GreenTales, where we brought the “FabLab Radio” project, that was developed with GreenTales. This is the page of the project in Maker Faire site.
In the third booth we showed the LitePlacer project, that was developed by Juha Kuusama and built and presented by us.
The fair had a huge audience and our projects were appreciated by the organizers, too.
For the “TribeBots” project we received the Maker of Merit, a recognition awarded to 110 out of the 600 projects presented in total from all over Europe: it was directly delivered by the hands of Sherry Huss, the Vice President of Maker Media and the co-creator of Maker Faire.
For the same project we were selected by Caterpillar show for an interview that was broadcast live from the fair on RAI Radio 2.
The TribeBots project consists of a swarm of small robots that move by means of vibration motors. The robots can notice the presence of other robots near by and modify their behavior accordingly.
The robots are programmed to simulate several situations: for example, they can divide into two tribes and get nervous when they meet a member of the other tribe.
Or, they can move in a synchronized manner, as in a strange dance.
The robots can be controlled by a special remote control or by an app that can be downloaded to a portable device.
FabLab Radio allows you to listen to radio stations that broadcast over the Internet using a tool that is very similar to a traditional radio.
We dealt with all of the electronics and software, while GreenTales designed and printed the case.
LitePlacer is a “pick and place” machine that can be used to position SMD components on printed circuit boards.
Some time before the Maker Faire, Juha Kuusama contacted us from Finland, proposing an interesting arrangement: he would have given us one of his machines if we assembled it from a kit that he would have sent.
The agreement also provided that we brought the machine to Rome and helped with the Italian speaking visitors during the fair.
This is the reason why this machine is now towering in our lab.
